the allure of abstraction

Erin Hovland was raised in Seattle, only a short walk from Puget Sound. After graduating with a degree in Design Studies, a major focused on design thinking, she worked as a visual designer for a variety of colorful industries (including a circus, mobile gaming, and internet memes). As an artist, Erin has explored a variety of media including photography, illustration, iconography, and painting.
Abstract art didn’t interest Erin until 2015 when she was gifted a painting (Blue Pillars by Melissa Osborne, her grandmother) to cheer up the empty walls of a new bedroom. After three months of enjoying and waking up to the piece, she decided to create the first of what would become many abstract paintings.
Erin’s works are inspired by nature, pop culture, and positivity. She likes to tell visual stories through the use of evocative symbols, gestural scribbles, awkward shapes, and bold color. Erin believes that despite the undefined quality of abstraction, there is a universal mood, message, or feeling in every painting. She likes to play with that perception, choosing shapes and colors that purposefully evoke light-hearted, tropical, and sometimes mysterious or magical themes.
